Up Close With Board Member Mary Emery

My first trip to the mountain west was in 1979 on a spring break ski trip during college. I was awestruck by New Mexico’s rugged beauty, rolling open vistas, rural villages, arts and theater communities, gentle climate, public lands, accepting culture and the great skiing. I was determined to move west from Wisconsin’s severe winters, and after college and did just that. I have now spent most of my adult years, 39 of them as a resident of the Taos area. I still marvel every day at how lucky I am to live in this special place. To me, this is the most beautiful place in the world.

Life is simpler here.

I started with Century 21 Success, LLC since entering real estate in 2003. Our office was opened by Norris Romero in 1979, and remains in her family today. Our agents feel like family to me, we work together with a cooperative attitude to best serve our clients. In 2019 we became into Taos Real Estate Group, after Century 21 dropped its smaller, rural offices. I currently serve a 3 year term as a Director on the Board of the Taos County Association of REALTORS. I was President in 2021.

Our daughter was brought up in the Taos school system, a 2015 graduate of Taos High School. She attended the Taos Charter School, a public charter school where we volunteered relentlessly to support her education. In retrospect, I feel that volunteering at her school was a valuable contribution I’ve made in this community. She worked hard, was accepted at Vassar College and earned her degree in Neuroscience in 2019. She earned her PhD in 2024 from the University of Michigan in Neuroscience, and is an Assistant professor of Neuroscience at Regis University in Denver. Her research is in the neuroscience of cocaine addiction.

One day while on the weekly Realtors Tour years back, I noticed a beautiful grand piano in a house we were viewing. In that moment I wished I could sit down and play something. That inspired me to start piano lessons in 2013, and I studied for 4 years. Although I had lessons in childhood, restoring what I know took a lot of effort. I love playing and practicing and mostly use it as a mental health conditioning for unruffling my brain from crazy real estate. I acquired an antique baby grand piano, sent it to New Jersey for restoration and now have a lovely instrument, and play daily. Maybe in the right moment, I can perform for my Realtor friends!
