Up Close With Board Member Gabriel Traister

Born in Phoenix, raised in Taos-Northern New Mexico has been home for most of my life. Maybe it’s more accurate to say that Taos picked me. I grew up in an Earthship-an off-grid, self-sufficient, sculptural home my father built over more than six years. No wall was flat. Every inch was unique. That house taught me a lot. It holds countless memories and lessons, but when it was empty, it felt just that-empty. It’s never just about the house; it’s about the people who fill it. That’s how I approach real estate-with a deep respect for the lives lived within the walls.

My path hasn’t always been rooted in Taos. When I was 12, my parents moved our family to the Kingdom of Tonga, where I spent five unforgettable years immersed in island life (not what you think!)-learning to sail and build. Eventually, my twin brother, Sasha, and I felt the pull to return to the wild beauty of Northern New Mexico.

A past girlfriend actually led me to real estate-she dumped me, and I needed something new to focus on! I say that half-joking, but the truth is, I’ve always loved real property and the real joy it can bring. I knew I wanted to be closer to that world, whatever it took. After joining Coldwell Banker Mountain Properties, Robbie and I founded The Walking Rain Group with a simple mission: better serve our clients and give each other a little breathing room now and then from work. Since then, we’ve grown the business steadily, becoming deeply rooted in our community. Real Estate is my career, not a part time job. This is the industry I love and hope to continue to grow in. The journey so far has been rich-full of lessons, challenges, and lasting friendships. And as for the future? I’m not going anywhere. Taos is just too good.
